Can Google Images
Help Photobuyers?
As the Internet continues to expand, it’s becoming clear that photo researchers for magazines, book publishers, graphic houses, corporations, etc. cannot afford the time to physically look through the exploding masses of images streaming aboard the Internet. Especially when they need to find a very specific image.
“The long tail search” (text search) has now been discovered by most photo researchers. They’ve found that Google search and the other search engines, MSN-Aol-Yahoo et al, can make life easy for them.
TEXT SEARCH NOT PICTURE SEARCH
It seems perhaps surprising to suggest that using text to find a picture works better than searching through images themselves. But professional photo research is moving that direction and leaving Google image concepts and traditional image search facilities behind.
For example, if you used an image-based search to find general shots of ”Capitol Hill Washington DC,” in a Google Images search you’d find 200 images, or more like 2,000. As we all know, we could shout out the window and a dozen photographers would come running down the street waving their great photos of “Capitol Hill Washington DC.”
But let’s say you’re searching for something very specific, like
“Capitol Hill Washington DC Amtrak Schedule Board.” Approaching your search through usual image search channels, you’re at risk of suffering “tired eyeballs syndrome,” searching through hundreds of inappropriate images at Google Image search, Alamy, PhotoShelter, Corbis and others. Or you may get frustrated time and again, getting, “Your search yielded no results. Please try broadening your search criteria…”
How to save time zeroing in on a source of such an obscure image? You’ll find a text search can be the answer. Here at PhotoSource International we’ve worked both with photographers and photo researchers to create just such a resource.
Back in 1999 we began building a website called The
PhotoSourceBANK, where photographers could enter keywords describing specific photos they have available (or could easily take). Each photographer can enter up to 3,000 keywords and phrases.
The PhotoSourceBANK now contains more than a million keyphrases (long tail search tags) and combinations of keywords and tags. We ask photographers to gear their keywords according to what they think a researcher might enter into a Google search.
Many photo Researchers who are up against a stonewall despite valiant efforts to find a highly specific picture, find the solution to their search is the PhotoSourceBANK. We advise them to include the word ‘photosource’ at the end of their search phrase. As our PhotoSourceBANK grows, more and more researchers are finding a “text” search to be more convenient and time-saving than an image search.
We’ve been offering this service for only ten years, but as the database grows from a million to a billion words, it promises a revolution in photo research, thanks to advances and improvements in Internet search.
Try it.
By typing a standard Google search for “Capitol Hill Washington DC Amtrak Schedule Board,” a space, and then the word ‘photosource,’ you’ll see that Google will provide a contact result where you can go to find a photographer who has your exact photo need and a deep selection of photos in that niche area.
You phone, fax or email the photographer, ask for a LightBox selection of pictures to review, select the one you need, negotiate a fee, and receive a high-resolution picture of your choice in a ma
tter of hours.
The beauty of this system for photo researchers is that photographers who shoot in specific markets usually have a passion for that niche market, are up-to-date on the subject, and available for additional consulting on the subject matter. You can’t get that with across-the-board microstock or Flickr shooters.
Do photographers enjoy keywording their images? No they don’t. “I’m a photographer, not a library scientist!” subscribers shout at me. But once they get a taste of the amount of business a hefty number of keywords generates for them, there are no more complaints about the tedious task of entering more tags and keywords.
Plus the metadata can keep selling their images for them when they retire, let alone be an annuity for their heirs, plus make their image collection attractive to stock libraries, museums, historical societies or universities should they want to donate or sell their archives down the line.
It all evolves around good keyphrasing!
A search for a picture in
Google Images is a nice place to visit, but no serious photo researcher wants to live there. It will never be a threat to specialized stock agencies or independent stock photographers who specialize. However, a text search at the standard everyday Google text bar can be a haven for photo researchers.

FORM A MARKETING GROUP IN YOUR COMMUNITY. Stock photographers, because of their varied specialties and emphasis in photography, rarely compete with each other, but they do have one common tie: their need to constantly update their marketing skills. Get together with stock photographers in your area for regular meetings.

Event Photography Handbook
What is “event photography?” If you’ve ever photographed a family special reunion, an award ceremony, a corporate function, a political get-together, a community picnic, a military ceremony, a sport team group picture, you have experienced the life of an Event Photographer.
As a stock photographer, you have an excellent opportunity to photograph in locations that ordinarily are not open to most people. Depending on the occasion, you may be permitted to gain outtakes from your shoot to be included in your stock photo file. Many event photographers miss or ignore this opportunity.
Of course, outtake shooting takes some diplomacy on your part, some bartering skill, or sharing of the revenues of stock sales. It’s not a vital element to your business, but it is a way to expand your stock collection without the usual administration that it takes to get entry into the way others conduct everyday living. .
Event photography offers stock photographers an additional stream of revenue. It also allows you to expand your business contacts at your own speed.
Like stock photography, at least in the beginning, you only need some basic equipment to start out. This book outlines the steps you will take to build a thriving business.
You'll learn how to find customers and initiate contact, select the best equipment for the job, and plan and execute the photographic capture of a wide variety of events—from anniversary photo shoots to business mixers, to ribbon cuttings and rodeos, to sporting and VIP events, The exposure is endless. You learn a typical marketing plan to increase visibility and draw more clients. And you’ll learn a lot about business etiquette when you are dealing with a variety of clients.

WISH LIST
Does this sound like your wish list?
1.) I have a day job, but I love photography and would like to sell my photos from my computer here at my kitchen table.
2.) I don’t want the hassle of sending out sample photos to prospective photobuyers and wait for their answer.
3.) I want to sell my photos @ $50, $100, $500, …---not for $1, $2, or $3.
4.) I don’t want to join a photo gallery site and wait for buyers. I want the buyers to come to me, not the other way around.
5.) I want an audio/visual learning course* that will jump-start my stock photo business right away.
It’s coming! All of the above. I’m putting the final touches on a 21-part audio/video course*, tailored for you, that wraps up all of the marketing principles that I’ve learned over the past three decades (here at PhotoSource International, we deal with photobuyers EVERY DAY –not occasionally), plus all of the latest techniques that have come through the Internet daily.
You know I’m on TOP of all of these new techniques and information because I publish and edit your weekly PhotoStockNOTES.
The price of this 21-part eCourse is going to be $79.95.
But keep alert... we are going to hold a pre-publication event next month (May) before we publish the DvD in early June. You’ll save $20 if you enroll early. Watch for the announcement in a couple of weeks.

Danny Lions’ work is reviewed by the New York Times. Among a group of revolutionaries whose work rose to prominence in the late 1960s and ’70s and transformed the nature of documentary photography — a group that includes friends and colleagues of Mr. Lyon’s like Mary Ellen Mark and Larry Clark.
His work could be called advocacy journalism.
At a time when picture magazines were still a holy grail for young photographers, Mr. Lyon, self-taught, began his career as the first staff photographer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. A week after hitchhiking south in 1962 at the age of 20 he was in jail with other protesters in Albany, Ga., next to the cell of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ref: Art:

ONLINE
by Bill Hopkins
SAVING ENERGY
It’s been reported that if all the computers in the U.S. were simply turned off each night, over $2.8 billion of electricity costs per year could be saved.
Put into perspective on a worldwide basis, enough power could be saved in one night to light up the Empire State Building for over 30 years! Of course, the $2.8 billion covers the cost of electricity only, and does not consider the cost of waiting for the computer to boot each morning.
One could easily argue, from a monetary standpoint, that the wasted manpower (er, humanpower?) could easily offset the power costs.
And there are other considerations, especially for large businesses. Like, if 1,000 computers were turned off each night, a company could save $28,000 a year.
SPAM BE GONE
And here’s another figure: $3 billion. That’s the estimated cost of electricity wasted by SPAM. Yep, when you add up the power costs of sending, processing, routing, receiving, and otherwise dealing with SPAM (not including loss productivity, filtering software, etc.).
On the bright side, McAfee says that the current levels of SPAM filtering have saved over 135 billion kWh of electricity, compared with no computer being protected. So, when you can, turn off your computer at the end of the day, and use that startup time to get settled in each morning.
Watch the Face(book)
By now all of us should know not to open suspicious e-mails or their attachments, even when the sender is known to us.
After all, the sender’s ID could be spoofed.
But are we equally vigilant when it comes to social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace?
Can’t wait to click on the hyperlink to a celebrity video? Or that hottest and latest YouTube video?
Think again!
Keep protected by running current antivirus software and keeping it updated. Restrict Facebook applications that you (or your kids!) install, and be very wary of programs that want you to install a codec (for displaying videos, for example). They are generally fake codecs that attempt to install malware on your computer.
As social networking sites and applications gain in popularity, we can only expect attacks using these services to increase.
POLAROID SOLD! Again
Patriarch Partners, a private-equity firm, has received court approval to purchase Polaroid’s assets out of their second bankruptcy.
They get Polaroid’s intellectual property, name, and brand. Patriarch says they intend to make Polaroid a "leading brand in digital instant photography."
But wait!
There’s an objection from Polaroid’s creditors. Another spirited courtroom auction, and this time, a partnership between Hilco and Gordon Brothers won out. (They own such brand names as Sharper Image and Bombay furniture.) Total price: $88.1 million.

PREVENT LOSS Your name, e-mail and address should appear with your digital submissions, sleeves, and prints. Also: If you move: Notify all photo editors who are currently considering your pictures for publication.
HOW MANY pictures should I submit to an editor? Submit a Light Box with as many as 6 images, but only if they are on-target, that is, within the special interest area of the photobuyer. Editors do not appreciate "shotgunning" (sending a variety of pictures and hoping one hits the target). You can submit as few as one or two images, if they are on-target.

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH? -- Photo Contest Wades Into Murky Waters of Digital Manipulation - The Picture of The Year photo contest in Denmark recently disqualified a project from its reportage category because judges thought the photographer used
too much digital manipulation. The story has sparked many lively conversations about photojournalism ethics. A proposed new contest rule came out of the debate: (proposed for a reportage photo contest like this one) . . . ”The Judges and exhibition committee reserve the right to see the original raw image files, raw tape, negatives and/or slides. In cases of doubt, the photographer can be pulled out of competition.”
http://www.pdnpulse.com/2009/04/photo-contest-wades-into-murky-waters-of-digital-mainpulation.html
TAKEAWAY: If it’s reportage, sure. No one likes manipulation of a digital image if it’s supposedly depicting an actual situation. Anything else, unleash the shackles on the photographer and let photographers be the artists they are.

This is a photography book for teens, -but wait.
When our family first moved to the country, I decided to plant a garden. At our local library in town, I looked up books in the vegetable gardening section. The thick, heavy tomes were over my head. I didn’t get it. The agricultural terms were too obscure for me. So, I went to the children’s section and took out a book that started with “So your Mommy and Daddy have moved to the country and you want to start a garden…”
If you are a newcomer to photography, this book may give you a fresh look at what it’s all about. Or if you are a serious amateur it might help you to look at photography from a different angle.
What’s included? How-to’s for 30 favorite photography subjects. Some pro tips from people like Arte Wolfe, David McLain, Vincent Laforet, Chris Buck, and others.
Of course, if you are a teen, you know that teens love to take pictures of their friends, their families, and their dogs, their nose and their toes. You can get serious with your photography with this book. It’s the first how-to photography book written by teens for teens.
The author is 18-year-old Charlie Styr, assisted by writer and photography editor Maria Wakem.
The book is illustrated with more than 150 photos taken by teen photographers around the world. You’ll learn about basic equipment, composition, and lighting, and explore 27 high-interest techniques, from portraits to action, macro, shooting at night, special effects. And, you can join the on-line contest.
About the authors: Award-winning teen photographer Charlie Styr started flickr.com’s Teenage Photographers group in 2006. Today the group has more than 5,000 members, with 84,000 images from teens around the world. Visit Styr’s blog at
www.theapblog.com. He lives in England. Maria Wakem is the editorial director of custom media at Photo District News and the editor of PDNedu, a magazine for high school and college students as well as educators. Visit her on the web at

RETAIN YOUR RIGHTS -- Doing the Right Thing - After
Bob Krist asked USA Today whether or not they really needed all the rights, originally outlined in their contest rules, the legal guys came back with a modified version. Yes, by entering you still give them some rights to use your photos, but only in connection with promoting and writing about the contest, instead of the
"all rights throughout the universe" boilerplate in the original contest rules.

April 9 – Edward Muybridge was born in Kingston-on-the-Thames, England (1830). He immigrated to California in the 1850s, where he took up photography and quickly became one of the first internationally known photographers. Between 1867 and 1872 he took more than 2000 photographs, many of them views of the Yosemite Valley.
It was Edward Muybridge who designed a new camera that could take a picture in one-thousandth of a second. To test his improvement, he set up twenty-four cameras along a race track with trip wires to pull the shutters. With those cameras, he managed to take a
series of pictures of a horse galloping, proving for the first time that all four of a horse's hooves will sometimes be off the ground at the same time.

Is Publishing In A Slow-Down?
Over the years, I’ve developed a barometer that tells me the state of the publishing industry – specifically books and magazines – when it comes to their need for images. (Newspapers are not among our target markets so I have not included them in this overview.
My barometer goes like this– I use these four guidelines:
1.) Photo Researchers and Editors. We talk with a couple dozen every day (checking in with them as to their photo needs). We have 3,600 researchers and photobuyers in our database and the 80-20 rule generally applies here. (750 generate the lion’s share of photo listings.)
2.) Major bookstores. If you like to burrow through the shelves, like I do, notice how
many new titles you see displayed. If they’re looking pretty familiar, not that
different from two or three months ago, that could indicate that the research
departments of major publishers have decided not to bring out many new
offerings this season.
3.) The total amount of photo need listings we get in for the PhotoDaily and PhotoLetter marketletters. The PhotoDaily lists the large publishing houses with higher budgets for photography. The PhotoLetter (weekly) lists the smaller houses, with lower budgets.
4.) Magazine shelves at spots like the airport, Wal-Mart, etc.
What do my guidelines reflect right now? The consensus is this.
Photo Researchers/Buyers
A number of researchers continue to work on projects that were assigned them last year at this time. So I haven’t included them in this equation.
Today, we sometimes hear, “I’m going to have something for you next month,” or even “next summer.” Some photobuyers have seen no drop in their workload. Others report a dramatic drop. So it’s a bit up and down. In general, however, no one expresses being snowed under by an overwhelming workload.
BookstoresThey reflect a holding pattern, with if not exactly a trickle, at least not a strong stream, of new titles packing the shelves.
Photo need listings - Down about one-third. We have stepped up our inquiries to photo researchers/buyers, yet our efforts result in fewer photo need requests than we’re usually able to compile.
Magazine shelves
This is an elusive one. Some magazines have outright dropped out of sight or gone to bi-monthly or quarterly. It’s evident many are getting thinner due to less advertising.
A bright spot: New magazines continue to come on the scene. You can check out new magazines at,
http://www.mrmagazine.com/newtitles.html ;
What’s The Prognosis?
From where I sit, while magazines and books are still churning out and we can count on publishers to keep producing material that needs images, it seems things are in a definite holding pattern. Like to all of us, to one degree or another, these bumpy times are dictating to just about every field of endeavor to hunker down and ride it out– hanging in there but with prudent cautions.
Budgets are tighter.
But from past experience I’ll wager that it won’t be long before we see signs of renewed activity – the voracious need in our global cultures for information and entertainment and education and the images that go with all this, cannot slow down for long.
The current “recession” is the fourth one we have experienced here at
Photosource International. We’ve learned that in tough times art buyers look to save money, but not at the expense of not getting the “right” pictures for their projects. The Internet is a plus for publishers in this most recent recession, allowing photobuyers to find the pictures they need through non-costly text searches, listing services such as our marketletters, and specialized stock photo agencies. Be encouraged – the world can’t get along, let alone the economy recover, without photography!

MARKETING TIP (From Sell & ReSell Your Photos, Page 272.)
Lost images? Still sending to a photobuyer who still uses slides? If you can prove a client has lost, destroyed, or damaged your image(s), you have the right to take that client to small claims court (in cases under $2500 in most cases). Seek help from the national organization…
Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts The Paley Building 1 East 53rd Street, 6th Floor New York, NY 10022 212·319·ARTS (2787)
ZEROING in on your corner of the market? Here at PhotoSource International we supply a computerized list of market lists (photobuyers) in your special interest area. Fee is $25 for the list in your specialized market area. Ask for Report E710.
www.photosource.com/resources.
HOW LONG should you wait before re-submitting your photos to an
"ongoing needs" editor listed in the PHOTOLETTER or PHOTODAILY?
About six months. Editors’ needs change within their specialization. Your pictures might not be of immediate interest on the first round, but could score on the second and third round.
Send top quality thumbnails only within the editor's specialization. A
ragged poor-quality thumbnail will only reflect sloppy work on your part. Don't worry about an editorial photobuyer "stealing" your hi-res image. They won't. Advertising or commerical buyers 'might', -but not editorial photobuyers. They are permament staff members of a publishing house, and 'stealing' and image would be of no advantage to them. It would only cause embarassment or
possible job loss.

The Photographer's Survival Guide, How to Build and Grow a Successful Business
Yes, it’s another how-to book on how to survive as a commercial photographer. A good plus about this book is that it receives the blessings of ASM P (American Society of Media Photographers.).
A CD comes along with the book that features templates that commercial photographers often need. .
By the way, except for model and property releases, editorial stock photographers rarely need such forms since you deal with a small community of buyers in the publishing industry. But it’s nice to have them in case you cross over to an occasional commercial assignment.
There are many tips (from a commercial photography point of view) on how to market yourself and your images among major commercial clients. How to price your work among them also in that arena.

It’s interesting to see included, bills from real-life photo shoots, before-and-after makeovers of marketing presentations and other correspondence.
Who are the authors? They are art buyers who have an impressive track record in commercial photography. Sosa.Stone worked as an art buyer in advertising and is now a consultant. She lives in Orlando, FL. Suzanne Sease comes from the world of advertising, where she was a senior art buyer, working with such clients as Capital One, Clairol, and AFLAC. She in now a consultant and lives in Richmond, VA.

Editorial Stock …
What’s the difference?
Now that microstock has become popular, photographers have asked me to explain
the difference between “microstock photos” that they see on portals, published in magazines, books, advertisements,...
and “editorial stock photos” they also see in those same media.
Let me digress. Just as in all of the arts, --music, dance, painting-- explanations and definitions don’t come easy.
But to add some clarification (and hopefully not mystification!) I would like to suggest that one way to define editorial stock photography is to say that
it’s not photojournalism. Granted, many news photos turn out to be perfect editorial photographs, in that they capture real-life experiences, and real-life moments. This is the primary aim of editorial stock photography.
The main difference between photojournalists and editorial stock photographers is that the latter are storytellers, the former are reporters.
Editorial stock photographers re-capture life’s moments through photo illustrations. Like the author who invents fiction to describe life, editorial stock photographers recapture a visual story, using local people as models, to present a real-life view of how they see the world. Their perspective is usually their trademark, since we all see the world in a different way.
I should also clarify the difference, while I’m at it, between
“commercial editorial stock photography” and the photography I’ve just described. The commercial variety, yes, deals with people, but its end purpose for being is tied to selling: a product, service, or anything that requires public acceptance or endorsement.
Because of the strict confinements and usage of a typical commercial editorial photo, they are usually art-directed, not photographer-directed, and include models and props of the highest standards.
And now we come back to the
microstock photos question. Actually, microstock has been around a long time. Twenty years ago we called the images “clip art” and they were used in newspaper ads, sometimes in magazines, and now and then in books.
In the past, great talent in music and photography was rarely rewarded. Only the few could rise to prominence. Times have changed, thanks to the Internet. Today, dozens of microstock portals feature thousands of brilliant photographers who in the past wouldn’t have been noticed beyond their geographical neighborhood.
POSTER PICTURES
What is a microstock photo? For this discussion, let’s eliminate the “object” pictures, those that feature a
white background, and an item such as a cell phone or a shoe. These are normally called “catalog shots.” All the rest of microstock images, I like to call them, “Poster Pictures.”
It’s not difficult to imagine a microstock picture as a poster celebrating an event, a product, an emotion, or most other everyday-living themes.
We have become even more emphatically
a visual society, and microstock photos have arrived just in time. A neighborhood fund drive committee can easily buy a microstock photo for their brochure. A self-publisher can include one on the cover of her short-run book. A software developer can illustrate his program. A jewelry shop owner can use one for a local newspaper ad. A major magazine can use one as filler. And a Boy Scout newsletter can include one in its layout – all at affordable cost.
Today, where would we be without microstock? Look at newsletters and brochures you migh
t have in your files from a couple of decades ago. They aren’t as visually exciting as they are today. Microstock has come to the rescue.
The real test in finding the difference between an editorial stock photo...
and a microstock photo is to ask, “Will this picture endure?”
Microstock, because of the timely nature of their usage must necessarily be “current.” Yesterday’s monitor shot won’t sell next year. In the fast-paced world we live in, trends change, fashions shift, products evolve. Microstock photos capture these, but then their shelf life is very short. .
On the other hand, editorial stock photography capitalizes on this phenomenon from a different direction. If the photo is a believable depiction of life around us, the photo can endure, and sometimes gain in worth and value and become of historical significance – something you can pass on to your heirs.
Is it possible to be both a microstock photographer and an editorial stock photographer?
Maybe. Wearing two hats is not easy in any business. But not impossible. Some people can speak two languages, or play two sports, or play two different musical instruments. Maybe you can engage in both types of stock photography.
Good luck!

Why Is My Computer So Slow?
By Nathan Segal
A common question I hear from users is:
“My computer’s running slow.
How do I get it back to that gratifying velocity it had when I first bought it?”
It’s a good question, but it’s coming from the wrong direction. Before
looking at any speed issues, the first thing to do is to analyze what’s
Happening with the computer.
Many people think that if they only replaced some component, their
computer
would speed up and all would be well. That could be true, but
it could also be a waste of money. You could have the best hardware in
the world and have a computer that runs so slowly as to be next to
worthless.
THE NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF A SLOW COMPUTER
The number one determining factor (hardware issues and failures aside)
that will slow your computer down is you.
“What?” You’re saying.
Let me put this into perspective. A case in point was a computer I was
asked to look at recently. The user was understandably frustrated. He was thinking of chucking the laptop out a window because it was so slow. Granted, it was an old computer, but what really got my attention was what happened when the machine booted up (which took a long time).
When I went to clean up the computer, here’s what I found: 6 different
anti-spyware programs all in competition with each other, about 5
different registry editors and numerous browser toolbars.
I was amazed. I set to work fixing the problem.
Some of the programs challenged me (with threats of dire consequences to the integrity of his machine) as I tried to remove them. I did and soon I had his machine back up to its ol’ self.
LESSON: “If you have poor software installing habits, such as downloading tons of files from the Internet, or words, accepting every program your colleagues give to you, you're likely to overload your system. It won't be long before your computer will begin to start dragging tail again.
------------REVIEW
"If you’re like me, after buying your new computer, you’ve watched it get slower and slower with each new program installed.
"Well, I found an eBook that may help bring back that memory of a new highspeed computer. Nathan Siegel’s eBook How To Speed Up Your Computer – In 30 Minutes Or Less is very useful as well as an insightful program that assists you in determining which programs are necessary to operate your computer at its’ optimal operating speed.
"I found this eBook to be very user friendly for PC users, with its follow-along Adobe Reader files and mp4 files to assist you in understanding which programs you need as well as those that are not necessary.
"I found in many instances, all I had to do, was turn off the program, and then, watch my computer get faster. Nice job Nathan. Your program assisted me in understanding which program I needed, and which one I could just turn off to maximize my computers speed.
"I would highly recommend this “user-friendly” e-Book to stock photographers as well as to anyone wishing to clean up their computer and watch them return to their “like new” speed again.

" I used the tips in the ebook "How to Speed Up Your Computer in 30 Minutes or Less" by Nathan Segal on my small Fujitsu computer.
"The Fujitsu is over 5 years old, running WinXP. I have a lot of stuff on it and it has been taking forever just to boot up.
"With the help of Nathan's ebook and a small investment in time, it now boots up really quickly.
"All of the tips on cleaning up the files and programs on the hard drive were helpful, but the most valuable tips to me were on cleaning the physical computer. We don't often think of how dust buildup can damage our investment.
"Thank you Nathan for putting all of this information in a concise, easy to understand, ebook."

DEADLINES are a necessary bind to photographers.
Here at PhotoSource International we request photo editors to send us their listings as
far in advance as possible. However, photobuyers, because of the nature of the publishing world, often need pictures "now".
If you see an "immediate" deadline listed in the PHOTOLETTER or PHOTODAILY, and you can supply the specific picture(s), use a light box and send a selection to the photobuyer. He or she may be able to extend the deadline a few days to be able to consider your picture.
LISTINGS: Are they aimed to give you leads for self-assignment, -- to go out and TAKE the pictures needed? Yes, if the deadline allows and if you want to add that kind of picture to your stock files.
However, in this industry, photo editors share a common bond: a definite tendency to decide on the picture needed
at the last moment.
Thus the short deadlines that are a hazard of the trade. Sometimes deadline leeways will allow our market letters to be a source of self-assignments for you.
But primarily our listing service is designed to provide you with market leads for pictures that you already harbor in your existing stock files.
PROMOTE YOURSELF. Your local city or town newspaper is always looking for interesting feature material about its citizens.
You are eligible.
Because you market your pictures to national magazines and book publishers, you are unique. Feature editors would like to write about you and publish a few examples of your photographs.
If you also conduct a photo marketing class, it's an excellent way to publicize the class.
The process: Phone your local newspaper and ask for the Features Editor. Describe what you do, then ask, "Would you like me to drop in for an interview and bring some of my pictures along?" (Personal interviews work better than phone interviews.)
Here’s a tip. If you’ve been featured previously in newspapers, and have clippings, leave them at home. Journalists like to do their own stories on you.
GETTING CUSTOMERS -- Wedding Lead Generators: Do They Work? Print ads and other conventional marketing methods require photographers to sit back and wait for clients to get in touch with them. For photographers who want to take a more
active role in marketing themselves, lead generating Web sites can help put them in touch with potential clients.

Keywords, and plenty of them are the way to get on the first page of a Google search. But they must be relevant to the site or the page they’re found on. “Stuffing keywords, just for the sake of quantity, doesn’t work. Googles aldorithyms have fidured that one out. Or repeating the same keyword several doesn’t wothk either. In fact you get penialized for it.
Getting top ranking on Google or Yahoo is so elusive because the Net is a moving parade. Once you think you have it nailed down, the wind blows southward and the parade has moved down another street, and you’re still playing the old tunes on your bugle.
I’m convinced the only way in the future for a photographer to consistently gain top ranking on a search (short of investing in AdWords or other similar (costly) features is to specialize your photography. (Be a big fish in a small pond.)
Switch your business philosophy from owning thousands of photos of hundreds of subject matter and all you earn is page 32 of a Google search -- to -- photographing only a single subject (that you love to photograph) -say, blue-eyed Chihuahuas.
Google and the other search engines will have you on the front page every time. But it’s got to be a highly specialized subject, like green-eyed gold fish. (is there such a thing?)
Try it, a search for blue-eyed Chihuahuas – you’ll find a lot of company and from all over the globe.
I’m not sure about the goldfish. But you get the point.

“In photography, the smallest thing can become a big subject, an insignificant human detail can become a leitmotiv. We see and we make seen as a witness to the world around us; the event, in its natural activity, generates an organic rhythm of forms.”

1895 - April 4 - Arthur Murray was born in New York City. He learned ballroom dancing from a girlfriend, eventually quitting his job in an architect's office to take lessons full time, then began to give lessons himself. For a while he sold dancing lessons by mail complete with photographs of himself dancing that a person could view through a toy
photo device called a "kinetoscope," Later he devised the foot placement diagrams for which he became famous.

It’s time to . . .
Remodel That Website
--Rohn Engh
Your photography may be award-winning, A+ pictures, but if you are presenting them on a website that looks amateurish or clunky from the last century – you may be losing out on marketing potential.
If sales from your Website have been sluggish, your ancient-looking website may be the reason. Don’t mean to be harsh– but that’s the reality when you’re dealing in a world that is “visually-oriented.”.
Here’s good news.
FLASH! - FLASH! - FLASH!
A NOTE TO PRESENT WEBSITE OWNERS AND THOSE PLANNING TO BUILD ONE.
The Web has come a long way since you first established yourself on the Internet.
Website producers, who ‘back in the day’ were understandably charging enormous fees for their work, have been replaced by web software producers who have put the control of building a website into the owner’s hands.
“What? Me build a website?” Yes. And to entice you to try it out, you can build you own Internet-ready website in 30 minutes or less, depending on your typing speed. Actually, there’s little typing to do . . . it’s mostly copy and paste.
NO COST TO TRY
The best part is that it’s fre>e. To be sure, you’ll get the Plain Jane variety for starters – but for some photographers that’s just fine. If you choose to advance to the premium site, that will offer you more bells and whistles, and in some cases, the ability to sell your photos on line with a shopping cart.
A NEW ERA
This is a new era for photographers, who up to this point mostly had to depend on their sales from on-line photo portals, who in turn, took a percentage of sales. Now the toll road points to the photographer’s advantage. Only a small portion of any sale will go to the website hosting company.
The spotlight is swinging your way. You no longer have to wait in the wings until you have a website equal to the top-dogs. The Web has leveled the playing field when it comes to building a web site. Some of these free websites will even allow you to transfer an existing domain to your new fresh-looking domain.
If you are wondering if flash technology is search engine compatible –
yes it is. Most of the Flash website producers say SEO works with their site and that you also have the ability to “switch over” simultaneously to HTML. And you are in control.
Here’s a sampling of available free website companies:
www.weebly.com
www.zymic.com
www.jimdo.com
www.blinkweb.com
Let us know when you’ve completed your “new look.” Website. We’ll have a contest in June.*
–Rohn
*Also let us know if you encounter any roadblocks and bumps in this new website arena. Flash. By the way, if you don’t know what flash is. Here’s a technical description from Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=flash+adobe
&ns0=1&title=Special%3ASearch&fulltext=Search&fulltext=Search
“Perception is everything. Marketers want to offer
na great-looking package, and customers want to receive one. “

MARKETING TIP: Can you objectively assume which photo will be chosen when you send a selection of on-target photos to a photobuyer? The answer is “no” -- because most photographers think like photographers –not photobuyers. How many times have you said,
“I never thought they would choose THAT one!”
This tells you that you should ‘
think like a photobuyer when you are shooting.’ Study the layouts of magazines, books, brochures, and websites. These will be a learning process for you. And it will serve as a
blueprint that shows you “how photobuyers think.”

YES YOU CAN -- In Britain, --
Google Sreet View furor: Is street photography legal? (UK) Though the watchdog's spokesman stressed that Google Street View is a 'legal application in this country', He said that the ICO would launch a formal investigation if Google was seen to breach an individual's right to privacy on a 'systematic' basis without 'safeguards' in place.
Taking a picture of someone in the street without their permission is legal in the UK.
Speaking about privacy, in general terms. earlier this year, photo rights lawyer Rupert Grey said: 'You have complete freedom providing you are not harassing people. That is the key point as far as taking photographs is concerned.' Posting a photo of a celebrity, such as Naomi Campbell, on an image-sharing website such as Facebook, would amount to 'publication' and give rise to a 'potential claim' for damages on grounds of invasion of privacy.
