If you’ve traveled by air lately, you’ve probably felt like a sardine. It’s obvious that the airlines are trying to “pack ‘em in.” What with the price of fuel, we can understand their Spartan ways.

But the PLUS side is that many airlines have enticed potential customers with “specials.” By checking out your next destination for your photos on Google, or other search engines, you can find inexpensive “deals”.

Compare fees. Shop by phone or Internet. Some airlines will be opening a new route, or be offering a special discount, to your destination. Fly off-season when fares are low. Or, during peak season, when special fares are offered when competition is high. Be aware that "air discounters" sell unsold airline seats at half price. You'll see them on the Internet or advertising in the travel section of your Sunday newspaper.

And there’s other travel you’ll want to look into.

Check with AMTRAK and GREYHOUND for current "specials." Foreign bus services often offer discounts on extended travel, providing you make your arrangements before leaving the USA. Unconventional travelers might want to travel by freight train caboose. Check with your local rail lines.

COMMERCIAL STOCK ADVICE. Here are 18 tips on conducting a photographer’s life that conforms to the way commercial stock photography is carried out today.
http://rising.blackstar.com/18-tips-for-being-a-photography-original.html
TAKEAWAY: A list like this reveals the unpleasantry of being a commercial stock photographer where you are tied to the whims of an art director(s), production managers, advertiser, public relations person, and the CEO’s sister-in-law. Few of these tips are applicable to editorial stock photography. The opposite is often true. –RE

If travel photography is your emphasis in editorial stock photography, a barrier might be the cost to get there, especially airfare to foreign countries.

You’ve heard of some of the clever ways of getting low-cost or no-cost airfare to the destination of your choice. Very often by just contacting the PR division of an airline (use Google to find your contact person’s name) will solve the $’s problem.

Airlines always encourage travel photographers and writers to publish up-to-date articles about destinations to where their planes fly.

Getting Low-cost or No-cost Airfare

I know because I’ve done it several times.

Once you get your foot in the door, it takes a simple phone call to repeat the process and let the PR director know where your next destination is and where to send the round trip ticket/(S). (Sometimes spouses are included in the project.) The airline usually has deal with local hotels –so …very often --room and meals at the hotel or a local restaurant are included in the package.

But there are many ways to get free air travel. Here’s a program to look into to learn how to break into TRAVEL Photography. You’ll learn the right season to take your trip and how to locate markets for your pictures (that’s easy, use your favorite search engine.)

This report will refine a lot of the answers that you will want to ask.

Not sure of when you need a model release or a property release when it comes to editorial stock photography?

Here’s a good explanation for you. Check out the Kracker Barrel. (See below)

Basically what the Kracker Barrel says this week ...is to stop all that fear-talk about whether you are going to be sued or not when you take pictures of people in public, or of public surroundings such as buildings, statues, museums and so on.

A quick answer is this: Yes you could be sued if you are into commercial stock photography and you released the picture for an advertisement –or even a t-shirt-.

But if you deal only with publishers of books, newspapers, and magazines – these publishers almost never ask for a model or property release.

But here’s the good news. Plaintiffs don’t go after photographers. They go after deep pocket publishers.

But enuf of this fearful topic – stick with editorial stock photography and you won’t get any letters from attorneys.

I’ve been at this business for 35 years and I can remember only one instance that the plaintiff (the party that institutes a suit in a court) was successful in a court case against an individual photographer.

CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN
-- How publishers can make web content pay - Some of the leading members of the Newspaper Consortium say they are fetching rates of up to $15 per thousand by selling advertising through a targeting system developed by Yahoo that, while valuable, falls short of delivering the level of detailed demographic and contextual information that could be provided by ViewPass. Independent photo marketing

It’s For Everyone

Now that the Internet has breathed new life into your favorite subject: photography, not only can you easily locate a workshop, photo travel safari, or the best prices for your camera equipment, but you can join the flourishing industry of Internet stock photo sales.

In the last century, it was nearly impossible for independent photographers to sell their photos themselves. You had to be either a “name” photographer or associated with a major stock photo agency, which took a healthy commission on sales.

All this has changed. With the Internet you can make your own direct sales (and receive 100%). You can make valuable contacts for further sales and assignments, that will last as long as you care to remain in business.

Yes, we’re talking about business. But not about work. Work is something most people avoid at all costs, or something they grit their teeth about and put up with, to earn money and make ends meet.

But if your work is something you love to do, can you still make money at it? The answer is yes, and that’s what will happen when you begin using the principles I put forth in my eCourse, How To Market Your Photos. This course shows you simple business practices to follow that will put you in touch with photobuyers who are at this moment waiting to find out about you to buy your photography.

Nowadays it’s easy to reach publishing houses whose theme (gardening, childhood education, fly fishing, etc.) matches your photographic interest area or areas.

The Internet has made this possible. Never before in the history of Communications has it been so easily manageable to match a seller with a buyer. In Marco Polo’s day, it took months, and years, to make business connections. Today, it’s a matter of seconds, to find your publishing house contact(s) through a Google search.

Even if your collection of photos is small, you can still begin today to enter this field and increase your sales while you build your inventory.

Do you need computer experience to be a player on today’s Internet playing field? Yes, but all you need are some basic, simple skills, an email address, and a modest website with plenty of keywords to attract buyers.

The “How To Market Your Photos” eCourse gives you all the examples and know-how you need to get your photo business to take off. Whether you’d like to sell three photos a year or three or more a week, this course will help you position yourself to get started, or to take your sales to the next level.

Go here for more information: http://www.photosource.com/ecourse

Rohn Engh, veteran stock photographer and best-selling author of “Sell & ReSell Your Photos” and “sellphotos.com,” has helped scores of photographers launch their careers. He is the founder of “The Breeze” a system for photographers to use in order to attain the Page 1-2 of a Google search. YOUR DELIVERY METHOD. Read this article a decade from now and there will probably be a different method for you. E-mail attachments, FTP, CDs, DVDs are delivery methods. Like all delivery methods they will one day become obsolete. However, your images will easily be transferred to the newest on-line delivery methods. Your present delivery method, for now, is good ‘nuf, thank you.

OUR DIGITAL WORLD. Learn to take, scan, and manipulate digital pictures. Borrow the equipment if you can't buy it. But remember, the best word processing program can't produce a good story without a good author. Film is dead. KODAK told us so. (See PhotoStockNotes, May '95, Pg. 1). It's still taking awhile for film to fade completely out, like horse drawn carriages, it’s still around. If you’re a debater on the subject, shake hands with those folks you've been debating with. They won.

LIGHTS OUT. Digital Photo Services: PicMe, BubbleShare, Riya .. They have faded to black.
"Ultimately it's very difficult to be in the consumer photo space," says Raiz. “Names like Flickr, Facebook, Photobucket, and Google (with its Picasa application)—have sucked all the oxygen out of the photo management and photo sharing market.” We can't out-market them." http://www.xconomy.com/boston/2009/08/14/dark-day-for-digital-photo-services-picme-bubbleshare-riya-fade-to-black/
TAKEAWAY: The photo management and photo sharing business is a brutal business to try to compete in. Even if you offer free services, you have to have the traffic to keep your customers happy. Without traffic you are a ghost ship floating on the open seas. The goal for individual stock photographers is to learn how to get traffic to their own personal website by getting on the first/second page of a Google search. (No one looks at Page 3.) -RE

DIGITAL DILEMMA? Photography contest breaks own record. The Iowa State Fair is full of interesting statistics, but consider this one: This year's photography salon received 4,577 entries. That's almost 1,000 more than last year and 200 more than the previous record, set in 2007. http://bit.ly/yeNce
TAKEAWAY: Wouldn’t you love to be a photo judge in that one?

ALL THE NEWS THAT’S FIT TO PRINT-FREE - When Sky News needed a picture to illustrate a shooting at Waterloo Station, they found what they needed on Twitter: a photo of the crime scene taken by Joe Neale and posted to Twitter using Twitpic.
http://onlinejournalismblog.com/2009/08/19/what-happened-when-sky-news-took-images-from-twitter/ (Thanks to Frank Nowikowski )
TAKEAWAY: Newsworthy pictures taken by “the crowd” benefit the reading public with its timeliness. Old news is like 2-day old bread. It’s stale. We all benefit by timely news. It’s fresh. But if the news organization attempts to find the author of the pictures to no avail – what’s a news editor to do? Publish or trash it? This is an interesting dilemma the Copyright Office (with its interest in such “orphans”) -- will have to tackle. Watch for the debate. –RE

"The How To Market Your Photos" eCourse
produced by Rohn Engh, of my own state of Wisconsin, is an excellent way for stock photographers -both pros and amateurs-, to brush up on their marketing skills when it comes to learning what's going on in stock photography today. The audio-visual CD format is an excellent choice cause it is so much more engaging than a written format. I also valued the interview portions with other industry experts, as well as the use of photos to illustrate certain points. I think that people who purchase this course will feel their money has been well-spent! - Patti Blair, Photographer, Milwaukee WI USA

The New Way That

Photobuyers Choose

Let me begin with a story. Roger Lamb and his wife, Janet, wanted to find some artwork for their newly remodeled living room. They live in Kansas City, USA and they figured they’d conduct their search at the 77th annual Kansas City Plaza Art Fair, one of the top ten Fine Arts fairs in the country.
Their name being “lamb,” they looked for art that would fit that theme. The afternoon in the sun was both inspiring and tiring, but they saw nothing in the way of painting or photography that appealed to them.
When they got home, Janet said, “Let’s try the Internet.”

In the Google search bar, they typed
photo painting illustration lamb

Within ten minutes they found just the photo they needed: A horizontal portrait of a mother sheep and three lambs in the Colorado foothills with the Rocky Mountains in the background. They chose a large format, 3.5’ x 4.5’. It was delivered in a hard cardboard roll via FedEx. They took it to a local frame shop where they matched a frame with their living room décor and the colors of the photo.

THE NEW WAY

As a stock photographer, you are going to be surprised by some of the requests you get for your photography. They will come not only from a photobuyer at a publishing house but from private buyers like Roger and Janet Lamb, who have discovered (just like many photobuyers have discovered) that the Internet offers an immediate and efficient channel to find choices for the exact picture they are looking for.

If your website and photos are keyworded correctly, or you are a subscriber to The BREEZE, * you are in a good position to find customers coming to your site – not only from the publishing field, but also local and far distant private customers who find you through the Internet.

*Rohn Engh, is publisher of the PhotoDaily, a marketletter that delivers photo request leads to independent stock photographers. He also offers two extra services to photographers, which promote their work. They are the PhotoSourceBANK, a website that lists up to 3,000 of your photo-description keywords on your own PhotoSourceBANK pages, and The BREEZE, a system that places you consistently on the first/second page of a Google search. . ANTICIPATE. -- Ever notice that book stores seem to know the current trend in reading matter? Most of the time. It's because publishers, who plan their press runs far in advance, do heavy market research. They discover what the public will want in 6 to 12 months. You can use bookstores to inspire your next (specialized) self-assignment. You'll be ahead of the game. Ask at book stores if they have designed a new book section, or are planning to promote a new topic. Use this knowledge to weave into your picture-taking and marketing routine.

CONTENT-SPECIFIC pictures will always sell for higher fees (rights-managed). Most RF (royalty-free) pictures will sell for pennies. Informational magazines and books will require unique documentary pictures (rights-managed--RM). Since there are fewer of these specialized-content pictures, they'll sell for high fees. (Supply vs. Demand principle). The massive numbers of "exquisite cliché" (RF) photos continue to fall in price, because, well, there are so many of them. And the number keeps growing.

COPYRIGHT. You can expect we will see some new copyright laws coming. But few will be enforceable. Foreign copyright infringement is rampant. As the saying goes, "Build a bigger lock and someone will build a bigger hammer." Put your energy to making more pictures and worry less about someone infringing your copyright. Unless you are a large stock photo supply company with a boardroom full of attorneys sitting around an oak table, going after a big-money infringers, put your time to making/marketing your stock photos. .

HOW TO EARN 200,000 AIR MILES IN SIX MONTHS
By Cameron Brick

Sipping my complimentary pinot noir in the American Airlines' Admirals
Club, I was excited about my business-class flight to Costa Rica.
Besides the $60 I paid in taxes to book the flight for both myself and
my girlfriend, the flight was free. I "paid" for it with air miles...
air miles I collected without stepping foot on a plane. (More on that
in a minute.)

First, let me give credit where credit is due... I found this
mile-earning technique on Chris Guillebeau's website, The Art of
Nonconformity. <3×5@chrisguillebeau.com>.

I took Chris' idea. And with a little organization and patience, I
have now treated myself and two friends to two huge trips...

First, my girlfriend and I were excited about the beaches of Costa
Rica, so I found front-of-the-plane tickets from Portland, OR for
60,000 miles each on American Airlines. We had never flown first- or
business-class before, so we were quite pleased with our comfy seats
and complimentary champagne.

And then the following week, I took my brother to Alaska, also using
airline miles, on around 35,000 miles each.

In total, I "spent" 190,000 miles and about $75 in taxes for four
flights. And these were all miles I earned without ever stepping foot
on a plane.

How did I do it? I did it by carefully opening new credit cards.

New eCourse 'How
to Market Your Photos'

Author Rohn Engh finds new strategies for today's Internet climate with new 21-unit course on CD

Osceola, WI August 4, 2009 -- Photographers, pro and amateur alike, will remember the name, Rohn Engh, from his best-selling 1981 book, Sell & ReSell Your Photos (Writers Digest Books). He is a pioneer in what has come to be known as "stock photography."

The word-of-mouth excitement over his book catapulted it through five successful updated editions until the Internet came along and made his "from your home mailbox" system obsolete.

But it didn't make Rohn Engh outmoded. He continued full bore by using the Internet to produce an formational marketletter, the PhotoDAILY that tells subscribers exactly where they can sell their photos, whether as individuals from home or as a stock agency representing other photographers.

Now Engh has gone a step farther and produced a 21-unit eCourse on CD ("How To Market Your Photos") that pulls together new strategies that successful photographers are using to take advantage of the Internet as a tool to make more sales. The eCourse shows photographers how to avoid modern pitfalls that lurk to trap the unwary; such as invitations to photographers to place their photos with an on-line portal (photo gallery) that purports it will sell the photographer's pictures for them for a percentage.
It turns out, according to Engh, the photographer's cut is not much at all, the actual asking price per photo is abominably low, and the traffic to the site is light. The photographer ends up with a monthly charge for the service that is higher than any revenue coming in.

"My eCourse shows independent individual photographers how they can capitalize on their photographic strength areas
-whether it be the unique place they live, or the unique photo-passion they have -like certain flower species, model railroading, snow boarding, childhood
education - there are more than 3,500 subject areas that magazine and book publishers have a continuing demand for, - to use in their upcoming books, their update materials, and publishing projects," says Engh.

"Making the match to appropriate photobuyers is the key in today's internet culture. Search engines are a powerful
ally for today's stock photographer. Photobuyers have learned to circumvent the large stock agencies and use search engines to go directly to a photographer's
website who has the exact picture they need," Engh says. "The secret to getting this photobuyer traffic is in knowing how to position yourself."

Engh says his eCourse shows photographers exactly how to do this. His promotional materials are replete with accolades
such as, "Thank you for providing an inspirational eCourse. The section about vertical markets really helped me in setting goals to shoot for a niche market
instead of remaining a generalist." -Bob Pardue, Carolina Travel Photos, Lancaster, South Carolina, USA.

Engh has gleaned his photo-marketing Internet knowledge from tria l and error, feedback from his popular newsletter,
PhotoStockNOTES, and from working photographers themselves. The eCourse includes interviews with photographers as well as photobuyers.

Engh lives on a 100-acre farm in the boondocks of northwest Wisconsin with his wife, Jeri. They have been there
since 1966.

Engh's e-Course, "How To Market your Photos," is priced at $89.95.

Forget what you learned in Business School

Are You Ready

To Throw

In The Towel?

The digital world has descended on photographers. Some have built walls or shut their eyes; others have dug in and figured out how they could go-with-the-flow.

“How do I find the market out there that’s best?” That’s a question I often get.
First of all, it’s the wrong question.
It should be, “How do I find the market out there that’s best for me.”

At your local Business School they teach students to find out what customers need. They use surveys and “market research” and then produce an answer for you. It’s the magic formula.

To follow the Business School methodology you do this:
In the university reference library, you ask for the SRDS. ("Standard Rates and Data Service".) These are the thick reference books that feature all the mailing lists available to rent, and all the magazines that take advertising.
There are other similar reference books and services too, but the SRDS is the “recommended” reference book that tells you which markets to use to begin your search for answers.. SRDS also provides an online service at www.srds.com. They’ll send you an updated quarterly version.

Another tip the Business School provides: Google. You can test most potential online markets by looking into the Google Adwords system (a free research system of AdWords). This system will tell you how many hits certain words and phrases get in your prospective target market area. It will also suggest other phrases and words, based on what is actually getting the most hits. This is the “common denominator” approach.

Next, you use your imagination or a Google search to figure out what phrases or words a prospect in this market area might put into a search engine, in order to test your own target audience. This way you can test to see if the results justify your entering into this market.
If the words and phrases you come up with are not among the most used, Google will tell you, and help you find better prospects.

QUIT THE BELLY-ACHING. The rhetoric we hear and read on the Internet about stock photography these days is often dripping with glum and gloom. But if you look closely whom it is coming from, you’ll find the authors are often pundits that were once well known in our industry a decade or two ago.
It’s a natural reaction. Their frame of reference is a structure that is long past irrelevant. Their knowledge of the present and past is darkened by a blindfold that won’t allow them to see beyond the dark clouds of their immediate horizon.
There are no dark clouds for fresh newcomers to our stock photo industry. Nor are there dark clouds for old-tymers who understand that building walls and dikes against the engulfing tides of new approaches to selling stock won’t help.
It’s wasted energy.
The only defense against this continuing avalanche of new ways to sell editorial stock photography is to dig in an adapt to the change. People who love their work are willing to adapt to change.
Next time you read on your chat group one of those belly-achers about the sorry state of stock photography, smile. The basis of their frame of reference is slowly sliding into oblivion. Tell them to let it go and either adapt (without a lot of squealing) or get a job at Wal-Mart. Our industry is moving forward. –RE

A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOSAND REBUTTALS -- The Obama poster-photo controversy continues. There’s nothing like a fresh filing to get one out of the doldrums. On Thursday, the other shoe in this case dropped when Mannie Garcia, the photographer who shot the Obama photograph at issue, filed a motion to intervene in the case as a defendant. Garcia’s proposed answer, counterclaims, and cross-claims assert that the photograph is copyrightable, that Garcia, not AP, is the copyright owner in the photograph, and that Fairey infringed his copyright.

VISITORS: WE’RE WATCHING YOU -- In Tiburon, California, visitors should be prepared to have their pictures taken as they enter and leave this picturesque town of million-dollar views and homes along the San Francisco Bay. Officials want to photograph every car and use the license plate information to solve crimes in the town of 9,000. Critics see the plan as an intrusion into the rights of visitors, but proponents say it is a sensible precaution that absolutely will not cross privacy lines.

THE GADGET GUY -- Waterproofing Your Camera for Deep Dives I recently took five waterproof cameras for a couple of dips in a swimming pool, snapping shots under and above water. But you don’t have to buy a waterproof camera to go under. Instead, you can get a watertight casing for many brands of point-and-shoot models.

BUT KEEP THAT DAY JOB -- Recession Proof Photography Niches - This might be a bad time to be a banker, an investor, a property developer, just about anything really, but a few branches of photography are still bringing in the cash. Stock photographers, and in particular microstock photographers though, are one group that do seem to be sitting pretty.
