Because you specialize…

You Can

Compete

The arrival of search engines
has brought searching for a specific image much easier for photo researchers. New Internet searching features have been able to break down the former restrictions in the stock photography business and open it to any photographer with on-target quality images.

Before the turn of the century
, photographers, like most other professionals, were “generalists” when it came to marketing their wares. That is, they put their ads in a trade magazine or the Yellow Pages, and based on their talent, marketing know-how, and luck, they conducted their business.

This made for extreme competition. Longtime pros were able to cling to their top position because they built a following based on their competence and expertise. Newcomers to stock photography found it difficult to surmount this unless they brought superb talent or an exceptional fresh approach to the marketplace.

With the turn of the century, the field of stock photography fragmented into targeted areas. The photographer who could photograph most anything for a client, the “generalist,” was no longer the top dog in the industry. Like in most other professions, photographers evolved to specializing; the trend was to develop an expertise in specific subject areas, such as aerial, sports, fashion, documentary, etc., and to go after a “niche.”
With the arrival of the Internet, all of this has changed, especially in the field of stock photography. The changeover comes to light especially when you look at the market from the buyer’s approach.
In our field of stock photography, a buyer turns to an image or images to get a point across, whether it’s for an advertisement, brochure, or textbook. Since our thrust here at PhotoSource International is from an editorial standpoint, I’ll address editorial stock photography.

At the same time, the publishing industry has become more and more specialized. Type any topic plus the word ‘publishing’ in a Google search, and you’ll find that a magazine, book publisher, website, stock agency or other entity, exists for the sole purpose of supplying that interest area with information.

Net Metering

No, I’m not talking about power company net metering programs for those of you (us) who have installed grid-tied solar electrical panels or other forms of local electricity generation (wind turbines, co-gen, etc.), but rather the possibility (some even say the eventuality) of Internet service companies charging by the gigabyte for Internet usage. In some areas, trials are being conducted where new users are presented a tiered service plan. The more bytes you want, the more it’s going to cost. After all, somebody has to pay for all the infrastructure. And, yes, this appears to be the result of a few spoiling it for the rest of us. You know who you are, the heavy downloaders taking advantage of movies and music available on the web. We went from really expensive (back in the day of 300 and 1200 bit dial-up modems) to cheap flat-rate plans, then inexpensive broadband, and now we’re coming around the bend toward metered Internet. By the way, the average Internet user consumes around 15 gigabytes a month.

Google Voice

Google Voice is a free web-based telephony system which allows one to set up a phone number which can ring any number of other numbers when called. It also offers many other neat features, including text messaging.
The question for the FCC: Is Google Voice an Internet company or a common-carrier service?
This is important because Google Voice blocks calls to certain numbers (those with high termination fees, like chat lines, for which Google Voice would have to pay much higher fees if it connected the call).
Under FCC rules for common carriers such as AT&T and your local phone company, all calls must be connected. But the rules are different for the Internet. Google has stated that it does block calls to certain numbers, and that to use its service, one must also have a "regular" phone service, and since it is a web-based application, is not subject to common-carrier rules. The FCC has opened an inquiry into whether Google Voice is restricting calls, and has asked for more information.

OUT IN PUBLIC PHOTOGRAPHING -- Seven Tips for Taking Photos in Public Places - No one should expect privacy if they are out and about in a public place. That means that everyone is fair game to be photographed on a public street and in open areas like a
public park. But defining "public" can sometimes be tricky. SOURCE: PETER PHUN, Black Star Rising.
http://rising.blackstar.com/seven-tips-for-taking-photos-in-public-places.html
TAKEAWAY: If you’re an editorial stock photographer, test this one out. Here’s a way to get good co-operation from people in public. On your shirt or sweater, wear one of those black plastic badges, -the kind a deliveryman or a nurse will wear. It should have your name on it and your website or agency. They cost under $5. In addition to the camera you’re using, always wear another camera around your neck, not in your camera bag. Reason? If you look like a hobbyist, you won’t be taken seriously. People actually love to be photographed if there’s something in it for them. As Andy Warhol told us, “It’s their twelve minutes of fame.” (They know your picture will appear in print.). Test this out. Leave your extra camera and badge at home and try to photograph in public. You’ll feel naked.. -RE

RARE ARTIFACTS: LIBRARY BOOKS.
-- School chooses Kindle; are libraries for the history 'books'? "...I'd come in here during a free period, there'd be no one in here," says junior Caitlin Forest.
So the venerable boarding school west of Boston last summer undertook getting rid of most of the library's books. In their place: a fully digital collection. After reading about the plan last month in the Boston Globe, bloggers and commenters worldwide have called headmaster Jim Tracy a snob, a spendthrift and a book burner and even compared him to Adolf Hitler. CHEAPER BY THE CROWD-SOURCING -- The PR announcement said that Getty Images is “restructuring” its Creative business responsibility for wholly-owned photos. Recently, reports emerged that Getty Images was shutting down its wholly-owned shoot operations after photographer Greg Ceo wrote that the Seattle creative shooting team will be let go as of 31 December. Contacted by BJP, Alison Crombie, senior director of public relations at Getty, says that “Getty Images is not undergoing “layoffs”. We are in the process of evolving our Creative business, which has been affected by the many changes in the traditional stock photography business over the last few years.” She added that the Creative Team would now focus on finding and sourcing emerging original photography, “as well as evolving the way in which we work with our contributors.”’ SOURCE: British Journal of Photography. DAILY NEWS. http://www.bjp-online.com/public/showPage.html?page=printer_friendly&print=870279
TAKEAWAY: Once upon a time, Getty Images decided it would staff in-house pros to take photos for Getty, so that Getty could enjoy full ownership of the images plus the profits, but the bean counters at Getty Images then found that the cost to develop, produce and take these images was much more than its budget would allow, so Getty has returned to the former system of letting the freelancers go out and take the pictures and let the freelancers foot the bill for the expenses of picture-taking. Crowd sourcing is now popular at Getty Images.

DON’T GIVE UP ON MAGAZINES. You’ll be seeing more and more touchscreen tablet computers coming on the scene. Guess what consumers will be reading? Magazines. When the next generation of them hits the market, one of its highly anticipated uses will be as a full-color reader for books, newspapers, and magazines. Of those three, the main beneficiary may very well be old-style magazines. The black-and-white Kindle doesn't do magazines justice, and they never really quite translated to the Web. The magic of a magazine is all in the layout and the interplay of lush prose with stunning photography or standout illustrations. Prepare to see more and more of your images appear electronically rather than in paper print. Having a surge protector...

An important tool when working with a
computer.

It doesn't take much for an electrical surge to damage
your electronics.

Here are some things to look for:

A response time of 10 nanoseconds or less

The ability to absorb 800 joules, minimum

A failure light so you know if the suppressor is defective

Make sure the suppressor can block electricity from phone lines.

Make sure that you can feed cable outlets through the suppressor

Ensure that it has enough outlets in different sizes for all your components

Make sure that the warranty is honored in case of damage to the suppressor or your hardware

Make sure it has a UL stamp (Underwriters Laboratory) and complies with the UL 1449 specifications. Protection comes in 3 numbers, 330, 440 and 550. The lower number offers the best protection.

Finally, don't count on your suppressor to stop lightning. Unplug all appliances during a storm. Even the best surge protectors might not work under these conditions. You don't want to find out the hard way.

by employing metadata. . . .
,

You’ll Sell

Your Photos

Is it possible to sell those images
in your photo files that are outside of your main photo specialization areas?
Yes, thanks to the Internet, search engines have now made this possible. Example: You may be known as a healthcare photographer, but you have an outstanding picture of a particular waterfall in Montana – in the wintertime. It may be just the image a particular photobuyer needs this week. How can you let potential buyers know about such images in your stock photography files?

Here’s how you can make contact:

List all of your images on a text-based website, either your own or a database that provides you with your own web pages, like the PhotoSourceBANK. (See http://www.photosource.com/products/psb.php) Label your photos with highly specific descriptive keywords (describing each of your photos). Photobuyers seeking content-specific pictures enter keywords for their search, describing what they need. Example: housewife, in shorts, washing house windows

If you have a match or near-match, it will pop up on their monitor. They will find the photo’s source: you.

Anticipate
how a photobuyer might search for a highly specific image. If you were a photobuyer that needed a photo of a pileated woodpecker in wintertime, you wouldn’t list “bird,” or “woodpecker, “ but “pileated woodpecker in winter.”
- - - - - - - - - - - -

Search engines are a boon to stock photographers. Photo editors use Google to find photographers who have a hard-to-find or out-of-the ordinary photo need. More and more photo editors are learning they needn’t waste great amounts of time when they are looking to find highly specific images. . . In your metadata, by giving keyword descriptions for each of your photos based on what search words you think a photo researcher would use to find the photo, you can make more sales.

- - - - - - - - - - - -

On your own website, or your personal web pages in a photo-search database, make your own “text” pages
, listing 3 and 4-word descriptions of your photos. The “web crawlers” that capture information from the web, search personal databases as well as the massive, major ones.

WHO WILL BUY MY PHOTOS?

If you get in the habit of entering brief descriptions of each of the marketable photos in your database (not only the main photos you feature at your site), you will have sales come your way.

Rohn Engh, veteran stock photographer and best-selling author of “Sell & ReSell Your Photos” and “sellphotos.com,” has helped scores of photographers launch their careers. Increasing numbers of photographers are putting text-based lists on the Web of the photographs they have available, either on their own web sites or on high-traffic photo databases like the PhotoSourceBANK (see www.photosource.com/products/psb.php). Photobuyers use such databases to find photos and to save research time. To receive the free report: “8 Steps to Becoming a Published Photographer,” visit http://www.sellphotos.com

WHEN TO AND WHEN NOT TO -- Embedded War Photojournalists Get New (Unclear) Rule. The Associated Press' controversial publication a few weeks ago of a Marine dying on an Afghanistan battlefield has prompted changes to the military policy governing the photographing of wounded or killed troops. The problem is, it's unclear exactly what the military has decided. SOURCE: NPR, Frank James
http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2009/10/embedded_war_photographers_get.html
TAKEAWAY: This is a tough one. Especially for children. They see a cartoon figure being flattened by a beer truck; and movies where men and women (fictional) are dying (tomato juice makes good fake blood). And then see a news shot of an American soldier dying. Do they make the mental leap between which is real and which is not? Psychologists guess at the answer. As adults we know it’s going to affect different children in different ways. However, the source of the effect is something new to consider for photojournalists and their professional organizations to debate.

DO YOU HAVE A BRAND?
A couple of decades ago, it was common for American families to identify with the manufacturers of their cars. Everyone, it seemed, had an uncle who was proud to consider himself a Ford man, or a Chevy guy, or one of those oddball Mopar aficionados. The automakers played up their rivalries on the racetrack, too, which helped secure loyalty. And a cottage industry of insulting rear-window stickers was born.
Whatever will become of all that? SOURCE: Daniel McDermon, NYTIMES.
http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/21/whats-your-brand/
TAKEAWAY: This article reminds us that “branding” is important, in fact, essential, for stock photographers. Photobuyers get to know you by your subject matter. When they need photos in your specialized area, they’ll come to you. To change your “brand” (specialization) is a kiss of death. Choose your specialization wisely, and stick with it. -RE

Wireless
Watch

If you use the wireless capabilities on your laptop, be aware that
while wireless access points are great for convenience and mobile
Internet connectivity, there are some important things to keep in
mind:

1. If you're on a home or business network, you should use
encryption to protect your communications. Of your options, there
is WPA (WiFi Protected Access) and WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy).
Of these two options WPA is the best.

2. Make sure you use both antivirus anti-spyware protection, as
well as a firewall.

3. Turn off Identifier broadcasting on your router.

4. Create strong passwords and change the router's preset password.
Stronger passwords are tougher to crack.

5. Define which computers can access your network.

6. Public WiFi spots might not be secure. Don't send valuable
information over this type of network.

7.
Power down your WiFi network when you're not using it.

President Appoints

IP Czar

On the October 13, 2008 President Bush signed into law the 25 page “Priority Resources Organization for Intellectual Property Act of 2008," which is more commonly known as PROP IP.

This law, among other things, created a new bureaucracy headed by an Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator (IPEC) to be appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate. The position has informally been referred to as the “Copyright Czar” or “IP Czar.”

The duties of the IPEC
under the Act are extensive, including the creation of a joint strategic plan to deal with worldwide counterfeiting and piracy, and chairing an Advisory Committee consisting of Senate confirmed representatives of government departments and agencies involved in intellectual property enforcement. An annual report must also be prepared by the IPEC and submitted to the Congress and disseminated to the public at large.

On September 28, 2009 President Obama appointed Victoria Espinel to the position of IPEC, subject to confirmation by the Senate.

Ms. Espinel is an expert on international copyright enforcement. She was the first Assistant United States Trade Representative for Intellectual Property and Innovation at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative and served as the Chief U.S. Trade Negotiator on IP subjects. She has also served as an advisor on IP issues to various House of Representatives and Senate committees, taught IP Law, and is the founder and president of Bridging the Innovation Divide, a not-for-profit entity.

The Appointment has been praised by various rightsholder groups representing the photography, music, entertainment, and other affected industries.

IS FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY ART? Charlie Finch: Reading the laudatory obituaries of Irving Penn (1917-2009), I asked myself why the work of this universally celebrated master always left me cold and came to the conclusion that it was because of fashion.
Penn himself seemed to chafe at his high status in the fashion world, lensing common objects, native peoples and ordinary people until the end of his life. Nevertheless, as with Avedon, there was always something chilly and removed about Penn's work. I put this to the artificiality, redundance and inauthenticity of the fashion world. One copy of Vogue resembles any other and particularly galling is the habit of fashion to dumbly look back on past trends and trendsetters and recycle them. SOURCE: Charlie Finch ART NEWS

THE CASE OF THE MISSING KEYWORDS – Carnegie Museum of Art will celebrate the photography of Pittsburgh icon, Teenie Harris. An exhibit documenting the work of one of Pittsburgh’s most influential 20th-century photographers might seem like a fitting project for a major Pittsburgh art museum, but there is a serious obstacle to overcome: the photographer’s negatives — of which there are nearly 80,000 — arrived at the museum without captions. http://www.pittnews.com/node/19665

Is A Model Release

Necessary?

Confusion abounds on this subject. My answer might surprise you if you are just breaking in to stock photography, and especially editorial photography where pople are depicted 95% of the time. And often the people you don’t know –strangers.

Here’s a rule: Editorial usage (book and magazine illustration) does not require a model release; but advertising, promotion, endorsement usage always require a model release.

It's understandable why there is confusion, when in spite of this, so many editorial photo editors in the favorite Photographer's Market directory say that they need a model release.

It helps to understand it from the photo editor's point of view…
(Photographer's Market is published by Writer's Digest, the same company that published my two books, "Sell and ReSell Your Photos," and "sellphotos.com.")

Any photo editor signing up to be listed in the Photographer's Market directory feels they’re well-advised to check 'yes' in the query square that asks, "Do you require model releases?"
Why?
There are two main reasons for this.

Photo editors do not like to receive an avalanche of amateur photos. By checking the Photographer's Market 'model release' square with "Yes," they figure this can be a preventative measure for them. Their time is valuable. They don’t like to train new photographers who are new to publishing. They’re lazy ...like most people. They’d rather stick with their veteran ‘standby' photographers..

It can eliminate much time-consuming and expensive work of reviewing tons of scanned images and CD's.
And the editors have a legitimate case. Most amateurs are not familiar with their First Amendment rights and the fact that model releases are NOT required for editorial use.
Photo editors, by stating that they require a release, are in effect eliminating extra work. The pro stock photographers know what's what, concerning editorial usage. They ignore the reference to model releases and submit their photos, with or without model releases.

Secondly,
photo editors like their jobs. They choose to work with familiar and well-established stock photo professionals. But they're also always on the lookout for fresh new faces, with fresh material, from photographers who have educated themselves on what photo editors need and expect.
Photo editors who advertise in Photographer's Market can eliminate any legal hassle (imagined or otherwise) that might place their job in jeopardy, by checking the "Model Release" square to "cover" themselves.
Here's a secret…. You’ll find that photo editors at your editorial markets will welcome any non-released photo that matches their current need (when they are going to use it for editorial purposes).
Since photo editors at most publishing houses rarely deal with advertising or other endorsement-type assignments, it's rare that they ever need a model release. If they do ask for a release, it's usually because they are working on a project of a particularly sensitive nature, such as drug abuse, mental retardation, sex education, etc. In those cases, it would be appropriate to ask for a model or property release.

Is That Software Real?

One of the fastest growing online scams concerns fake software,
sometimes known as fake anti-malware software, or "Rogue" software.

It's marketed by ads that simulate genuine software programs.
You'll encounter seemingly legitimate names such as: DriveCleaner,
AdvancedPCTweaker, PC Cleaner 2008,
and many, many others.

Here are some things to know about rogue/fake anti-malware software:

When you visit one of these sites, you'll be encouraged to run a
scan on your computer for spyware. The scan will inevitably find
that your computer is infected with spyware (whether you have it or
not) and will try to scare you into paying for the software to
remove it.

If that software gets on your computer, it can cause all sorts of

Freelance Photographer’s Handbook

Freelance Photographer’s Handbook – Success in professional digital photography – Authored by Cliff Hollenbeck and Nancy Hollenbeck; these photographers operate a leading travel photography and film making business.
Together they own and operate Hot Shot Productions and Hollenbeck Photography—a flourishing film business and a still photography company. This is the second edition of this book and updated to include film as well as digital.
They did their homework on this book. It introduces the photographer to the “freelance” area of photography as well as providing many different strategies for a photographer in building his or her’s successful business in the digital world.

Chapter 1 Welcome to The World of Freelance Digital Photography, shows us the what, where, why of becoming a freelance photographer. The rest of book gives you the “how to”.
Chapter 2 Specializing - gives a general overview of subject areas that a freelance photographer might be interest in pursuing. “General” is the optimal word here – nothing specific, but enough to wet your appetite in a very large field. Such areas as advertising, commercial, fashion, fine art, photojournalism, sports, stock, and wedding areas.
Chapter 3 The Technology of Photography – is a bit more specific in its coverage of what kind of digital photo equipment you need to operated a freelance business – cameras, insurance, security, computers, computer programs as well as education. This chapter really reflected their real life experience in owning a photography business.
I thought Chapter 4 & 5 and 8 (Creating Photos That Sell, The Business of Business and Selling Your Photography) really reflected the heart of this book by showing you examples of saleable images, discussing “hobby vs. profession, getting a business off the ground, producing the product, providing the services as well as analyzing potential markets to sell your photography,as well as selling yourself. Very well written and illustrated.

Also, not to be outdone, Chapter 9 Your Portfolio, was a really nice touch from two great professional photographers. I loved “Best of Your Best” ideas in promoting your business.

And finally, Something I don’t see often enough – Resources, a full 18 pages of places to further your education and research, any of the subjects covered in their book. I would have no trouble in highly recommending this book to stock photographers as well as anyone wanting to enter the freelance photography field.-- jps

DOCUMENTARY AUSTRALIA – A NEW exhibition opening this week at the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia, offers the chance to review some of the riches of its international photography collection. It aims to give an insight into aspects of the history of creative photography and, through a direct engagement with selected images, prompt consideration of why these works are now regarded as among the most celebrated in the medium's history.Documentary photographs entered library collections in the 19th century, but there was no separate curatorial department of photography in an Australian art gallery until the NGV established one in 1967.

WHAT'S A PHOTO? -- Ethics as it relates to photography depends on the photographer’s intentions. It’s important to remember that distorting photos as an artistic pursuit differs from changing photos to discredit individuals or falsify information. At the same time, it’s difficult to determine the ethics behind photo manipulation because of the way that photos are read subjectively. Photography, after all, lacks a certain amount of objectivity in itself. The only thing that is certain is that the debate around photographic ethics will continue as technology continues to advance.

Promotion

What Works

In the fast moving digital world of stock photography you would think that an inexpensive way to promote your editorial stock photographs to photo editors at magazine and book publishers would be to place top photos from your photo collection onto a CD and send them off to prospective photobuyers.

It doesn’t work.

Reason? Photobuyers are known to stand over a wastebasket when they answer their mail. Unsolicited CD's most always are dropped into the trash.
Photobuyers are not known to look at the CD's of ‘unknowns.’

It’s called “Hope marketing.”

Don't despair, -it happens in all the creative fields: songwriting, script writing, fiction, music, dance and painting -- all of them.

However, as an “unknown” photographer, you have an advantage - the following four promotional tools are usually accepted by a photobuyer: postcards, magnets, calendars, and posters, in that order.

Postcards: There's no envelope to open, your pitch is on one side and a sample of your photography is on the other side. Standard postcard size will “pull” just as well as the larger postcard (that costs more to mail.) Some recommended places to find mailing lists of photo editors/art directors: freshlists.com (1 800 322-3985); adbase.com (1 416 960 4240); photosourcefolio.com (1 800 624 0266).

THE WRITE WAY
-- The toughest way to sell your editorial images is the one faced by most photographers: you have to pitch your photos directly and unsolicited to photo editors. They look at dozens of portfolios a week and only rarely find images that they like enough to pay for. Fortunately it is also possible to try a different way in. Instead of trying to sell your pictures, you pitch a story - one that comes complete with professional-quality photos. http://bit.ly/P7mVu

YOUR POINT AND SHOOT

ALL RIGHTS--… SHOULD YOU SELL THEM?: Only if the fee is substantial enough to justify giving up your resale rights. What to charge? Usually three or four times the fee you would charge that same market for one-time use for the same picture. Writers, by the way, for all rights generally charge half again as much as the same market would pay for first rights (for an article), if the market is in the top fee range. For a market in the middle or lower ranges their fee for all rights is two to three times the first-rights.

THE SHARING MEDIUM -- Digital media is changing the face of photography. As the need to share photographs continues to grow, so does the technology to make photo-sharing easier. YES OR NO?
-- Whether to take and then to publish photographs of injured, dead, and dying American Servicemen and women remains a deeply troubling and hotly debated issue. NEW AVENUES -- Newspapers – The New Magazines (UK). Simon Jenkins has been on a run of good form with his recent Guardian columns. His thesis is, basically, that newspapers should be staging everything from commercial fairs to sporting events and arts and book festivals. There is money in all of them. Newspapers should not be investing in fancy printing presses but in the "long-tail" economics of live enterprise, with the printed word as a mere core activity. http://timholmes.blogspot.com/2009/08/newspapers-new-magazines.html
TAKEAWAY: In an attempt to open new source of revenue, newspapers and music hucksters are learning to capitalize on established name-recognition. BREAST CANCER UPDATE -- The Faces of Light photography. The photo exhibit is just one way Melançon has worked to use his story as a way to bring greater attention to male breast cancer. He also is on the board of directors for the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship and plans to continue community outreach. "We all know the theory about living in the present," he said. SPECIAL SITES -
- The Quiet Power of Micro Websites - “Days With My Father” is just one of several projects sites Phillip Toledano has created. It’s also one of many websites photographers in general have created to showcase a specific project, apart from their commercial portfolio sites. The projects often reflect creative ambitions, and the sites emphasize the work while barely mentioning the photographer. Self-promotion, in other words, is not the primary intent but executed well, project sites can lead photographers to new assignment opportunities, print sales, and offers for exhibitions and book projects.
