LOST AND FINDING

Picture this: ... I’m an Eastern city boy way out in an isolated area of the Arizona desert, far off the road.
I’m experimenting for the first time with my brand new digital camera, doing environmental close-up photography of lizards and butterflies.
I put down my camera case with all my lenses in it to give myself more freedom of movement.
I was caught up in getting some great shots, exhilarated by all the life I was observing in the desert.
Eventually I got back to my car and moved on to several more desert stops and shots. I’d been using my wide-angle lens, and when a scene presented itself that needed a macro lens, it hit me (panic time) that my case was miles behind me somewhere where I had left it out in the desert.

Starting a search for my equipment was a scary thought, all the more so since the sun was near setting and that’s when the rattlesnakes come out.

Stop and think for a moment. What would you do? Talk about a needle in a haystack!

Well, first I made a U turn and looked for familiar stops that I had made. Not helpful – everything looked both familiar and unfamiliar.
Then it hit me, why not look at the images on the back of my new digital camera, in reverse order.
I had just learned to use this feature. The background mountains in some of the images guided me slowly back to the area where the bag was lost, but it was still far off the road.
Then I retraced my steps to the last image, where I’d made my last lens change, and walked until I was able to align the background configuration visually with the image on the back of the camera.
Although it was almost dark, I spotted the camera case and all its contents, exactly where I’d left it!

My verdict on digital cameras? Yes, I like ‘em!

By the way, some of the newer digital cameras have a built-in gps system, which could also be useful today in locating something lost.

I hope my experience may help other photographers who may find themselves in a similar fix! - David Heb
